[The following is a description of the performance.]
Eri Watanabe, who led the small theater boom of the 1980s and continues to run with the same energy, has a unique originality, greatly influenced by figures who shaped post-war Japanese theater such as Shuji Terayama, Juro Kara, and Yukio Ninagawa. She wants to deliver her theater, which is meticulously handcrafted and insists on troublesome things, to young people embarking on the labyrinth of theater, and to everyone who will live in the world from now on. With this passionate desire, it has been decided that Whale! Ride on My Hand and Ribbon will be performed consecutively to commemorate Eri Watanabe's 70th birthday.

In the history of modern Japan, there have been times when women were not recognized as equal human beings and were discriminated against. Eri Watanabe's past works, Whale! Ride on My Hand and Ribbon, delve into the lives of such women. Although the approaches differ, both works share the depiction of women living their lives while being tossed about by turbulent times. Aren't we deeply moved by their powerful way of life?

Now is the time to perform these two consecutive plays that show hope amidst hardship! And Eri Watanabe chose to perform these two works at the milestone of her 70th birthday, her koki.

Whale! Ride on My Hand was performed at Honda Theater in Shimokitazawa from Wednesday, January 8, 2025, to Friday, January 17, 2025. Ribbon was performed at Honda Theater from Saturday, January 11, 2025, to Sunday, January 19, 2025, and then at the Yamagata Civic Hall, Watanabe's hometown, on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
