■ History, Origin, and Characteristics
It is said that the origin of the local crafts Kijiuma and Hanatebako began when the Taira clan, defeated in the Battle of Dan-no-ura, started making toys in this mountainous region of southern Kumamoto Prefecture.
In the late Meiji period, Mr. Kitaro Sumioka revived the techniques for Kijiuma and Hanatebako. The third generation continues to produce them at the Sumioka Kyodo Gangu Seisakusho in Kajiya-machi, Hitoyoshi City.
The Hanatebako is made by applying Japanese paper and then painting over it, resulting in vibrant colors for the camellia's red, white, and green. The finish conveys a sense of dignified strength, hope, and elegance.
